Prevention is better than cure; especially when something has no cure.

Prevention and Harm Reduction

Our Commitment

Stopping HIV Before it starts

According to the CDC, we currently have an unprecedented opportunity to end America’s HIV epidemic, but many people still aren’t getting the prevention and care they need to stay healthy. LAAN is committed to working with our community to reach the CDC’s national goal of reducing new HIV infections by 90% by 2030. Yet progress in HIV prevention has slowed in the face of new and continuing threats, including the nation’s opioid crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and enduring gaps in access to healthcare. LAAN will continue to work within Mid-Michigan to provide prevention and harm reduction services and education as well as free and anonymous HIV testing.

HIV Testing Services

How Does Testing Work?

A HIV fingerpick test is a quick and easy way to get tested for HIV. Your finger is pricked and a very small sample of blood is taken and tested for HIV. Results are available within 20 minutes, and are completely free and confidential. All testing is performed by trained and certified test counselors.

Unlike on-site testing with finger pricks, at home testing options consist of an oral swab. Test counselors are available and ready to discuss any results from at home kits with you and provide further guidance and information as needed.

Testing to fit your schedule

Knowing your HIV status is a normal and important part of routine healthcare. LAAN offers a variety of testing times and locations to work with your schedule!

The Key to Harm Reduction

prevention Methods

With the right combination of methods for you, HIV is 100% preventable! While no one method is completely effective, with proper use as discussed between you and your health care professional, prevention is possible.

PrEP | Reduced risk of getting HIV thorugh sexual transmission
99%
PrEP | Reduced risk of HIV through injectable drug usage
74%
PEP | Lowers rate of HIV transmission after exposure
80%
Male Condom | Reduces risk of HIV transmission through sex
90%
Female Condom | Reduces risk of HIV transmission through sex
94%

PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is medicine people at risk for HIV take to prevent getting HIV from sex or injection drug use.

PrEP may be right for you if you test negative for HIV, and any of the following apply to you:

You have had anal or vaginal sex in the past 6 months and you

  • have a sexual partner with HIV (especially if the partner has an unknown or detectable viral load),
  • have not consistently used a condom, or
  • have been diagnosed with an STD in the past 6 months.

You inject drugs and you

  • have an injection partner with HIV, or
  • share needles, syringes, or other equipment to inject drugs (for example, cookers).

You have been prescribed PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) and you

  • report continued risk behavior, or
  • have used multiple courses of PEP.
  •

If you are a woman and have a partner with HIV and are considering getting pregnant, talk to your doctor about PrEP if you’re not already taking it. PrEP may be an option to help protect you and your baby from getting HIV while you try to get pregnant, during pregnancy, or while breastfeeding.
