LAAN offers free, weekly HIV counseling, testing, and referral services at various sites and at some outreach activities. All tests are confidential. Test clients can opt to test anonymously. LAAN uses both the Clearview HIV ½ Stat-Pak Antibody rapid screening test for the detection of antibodies for HIV-1 and HIV-2 and the Orasure HIV antibody test. Currently, rapid testing is available by appointment only at the LAAN office; although walk-in testing is available at some sites.
LAAN provides health education and risk reduction workshops (HERR) to community groups, substance abuse treatment centers, and youth in the juvenile justice system. LAAN also offers workshops targeting designated high risk populations such as men who have sex with men (MSM). In these workshops, participants learn safer sex skills and drug and alcohol harm reduction strategies to help reduce their risks for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STI). Prevention staff also routinely provides HERR and education services to medically case managed clients at LAAN and other agencies.
LAAN staff has conducted workshops and provided HIV testing for youth and adults in court diversion programs, faith-based organizations, area homeless shelters, community health fairs and festivals, schools, colleges, and universities. Although some of these activities have been reduced due to established funder priorities, LAAN has been successful in providing limited services to those whose behaviors and/or situations put them at higher risk for HIV infection or transmission and communities disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. These efforts have been realized through strong collaborations, fundraising efforts, donations, and various smaller foundation grants.
